Wimbledon Embraces Video Challenge Technology in 2025.

Wimbledon tennis court with video review system

The tournament joins the US and Aussie Opens in implementing video review technology.

Replay technology are set to arrive at The Championships for the 2025 edition.

Competitors are granted the option to contest specific decisions from the chair umpire, following the protocol already in operation at both the American Grand Slam and the Aussie major.

This innovation is slated for use on the main stadium and Court One for the duration of the tournament and on the remaining featured courts when they are staging singles contests.

This step arrives only a year after the AELTC implemented ELC, which terminated the centuries-old tradition of line officials.

Reviewable Decisions

Players cannot to dispute the call of the ELC system, but are allowed to request the official to re-examine other decisions, such as:

  • Whether a tennis ball has double-bounced.
  • If a shot touched an rival's racket or person during play.
  • Possible interference end of a rally.

Importantly, there is no limit on the number of challenges a player can request.

Case in Point

A recent example occurred in a recent tournament last week, where a top player initiated the review system against his opponent.

The British player conceded it was a difficult situation for the umpire, but thought his opponent had "used the regulations quite well."

The umpire viewed a replay and determined Draper was guilty of hindrance, awarding the rally to his opponent.

Broader Adoption

This technology aren't new for major tournaments. The system has been in use at the American major for two years and the Australian Open since 2025.

Additionally, it is increasingly prevalent on the women’s WTA Tour, and by the coming year the men's ATP Tour will have the system in place at every one of its events.

Further Updates

A further innovation at The Championships 2025 will be the introduction of visual indicators on displays to complement the audio calls from the electronic line calling system.

This solves instances where fans have sometimes been uncertain whether a shot was in or out.

In other news, with precisely a century of days remaining until the start of the Championships, the AELTC have also announced an increase in daily capacity at the qualifiers in Roehampton.
