Federal Reserve Cuts Borrowing Costs for Second Time This Calendar Year During Financial Instability

The US central bank reduced interest rates on midweek, marking the second reduction this year amid economic turbulence originating from the federal government shutdown and tariff policies.

Move Comes at Unprecedented Moment for Federal Reserve

The decision to reduce the benchmark interest rate by a 0.25% to a range of 4% to 3.75% arrives at an extraordinary juncture for the central bank. The institution has been under immense pressure to lower borrowing costs even with ongoing price increases.

Central Bank Announcement Notes Labor Market Shifts

In a statement, the Federal Reserve stated that the unemployment rate had increased but remains low. “Job gains have decelerated,” the statement notes. “Price increases has risen and stays somewhat elevated.”

Federal Closure Hinders Fed’s Job

The ongoing government stoppage, now among the lengthiest in American history, has also complicated the Fed’s job. Gathering of key financial statistics has been suspended without a timeline as employees at the Bureau of Labor Statistics are on leave during the closure.

Information Shortage Affects Monetary Moves

The Federal Reserve usually studies labor statistics to determine labor market conditions, including the number of employment gains added to the market and the present unemployment rate. The last jobs report was released in early September, prior to the closure, and provided a relatively bleak snapshot of the jobs market in the previous month.

The figure of positions created to the market in August was down by more than 100,000 since the spring, and unemployment crept up to 4.3% – the peak since three years ago.

Alternative Reports Show Continued Slowdown

Though BLS was scheduled to release September’s employment data in the start of last month, it suspended its publication once the closure began. Private payroll firm a leading payroll processor indicated earlier this month that the business segment eliminated 32,000 jobs in September, a sign that the employment landscape is continuing to slow.

“Both the supply and demand for workers has declined significantly,” Fed chair Jerome Powell said earlier this month, a trend he had previously attributed comes from immigration and tariff policies.

Price Data Reveals Gradual Increase

Though BLS’s jobs report has been paused, the bureau still issued its price statistics for September that indicated that prices are going up, although slowly. Prices rose 3% over the past twelve months, the peak since January. In spring, the annual inflation rate was 2.3%, the lowest it has been since 2021. The central bank’s goal price increase is two percent.
