A bettor made nearly half a million dollars on the ouster of the Venezuelan leader just before it was made public, leading to inquiries about potential gains made from inside knowledge of the US operation.

Sudden Shift in Forecasts

Wagers on Polymarket, an online prediction market, that the leader would be removed from office by the month's conclusion rose in the hours before President Donald Trump declared on the weekend that the Venezuelan leader had been seized.

One account, which became a member in December and made four bets, all on political events in Venezuela, profited a total of $436,000 from a modest bet of $32,537.

It remains unclear. The anonymous account had only a blockchain identifier for identification.

Probability Spikes Before Announcement

Market statistics shows that users put the odds of Maduro's exit at just under 7% in the late afternoon of Friday, January 2nd.

Yet the odds had climbed to over 10% by shortly before midnight and skyrocketed in the early hours of the next day, indicating a sharp shift in market sentiment right before the public announcement was made.

"That trade has all the signs of a bet based on confidential knowledge," stated Dennis Kelleher.

Several of other traders also profited significant sums from predicting the capture.

Legal Questions Emerges

Politicians are growing concerned.

A bill put forward on Monday would prevent public officials from participating on prediction markets if they have "confidential government knowledge" related to a bet.

Industry Context

Forecasting platforms have grown significantly in recent years, with participants able to wager on everything from elections to politics.

The industry faced scrutiny under the Biden administration. But it has received a warmer welcome during the Trump presidency.

Using confidential knowledge is illegal in the securities markets, but there are less oversight in the prediction market industry.

An official representative for another major platform said their site "explicitly prohibits insider trading of any form."
